King's Kung-Fu and Tai Chi Classes
What students say about our classes
What I really like about
Richard Mieir-King's Kung Fu class is that he is willing to work with
you, even if you have some physical limitations. I have
chronic back pain and arthritic knees (which are both much improved
since starting the class- to the point that I no longer have
to take Naproxen for pain relief), but if I am feeling any
pain, I know that I do not have to "push
it". I also really like the level of knowledge that
Sifu Richard extends to the classes. I have taken
Hapkido, Hwa Rang Do and Tae Kwon Do, but I have
learned much more and at a faster pace with Sifu Richard and
his sister Sifu Jean. I would recommend this class because it
has helped me add strength, conditioning and confidence. Dirk Aldridge |
"I enjoy the Tai Chi and Kung Fu lessons tremendously.
I feel invigorated after each lesson. By taking the Tai Chi classes, my breathing and balance has improved. The Kung Fu instruction has challenged me to use my mind to memorize movements and to improve my focus in other activities. I would recommend this class to others so that they can push themselves both physically and mentally. Kung Fu and Tai Chi classes do involve hard work, but you feel a sense of accomplishment after each lesson. Most of the time I am able to fully do the instructions given. However, when I am not able to fully do the movements, due to age or flexibility issues, tailored instruction is given to utilize the benefits. The instruction is tailored to fit the individual's needs. It can be used with any limitations that the person might have." - Dan H |
My name is Steve and I am 53 years old. I have been taking
Richards Tai Chi class for about two years. I also take his Kung Fu class. Richard is a great instructor! he is very patient and clear with his instruction. In Tai Chi there are young and old students and we all work together with the forms. If some one is physically unable to do the form he will show another way that will work for that person. there are forms done sitting down that are very effective and he can tailor make an exercise form to fit your physical situation. For me the hand -eye-mind coordination is awesome! I highly recommend Richard! Steve L. |
We appreciate your
teachings. I have never met any teacher who
explained in such detail each movement as you do. I/we hope
we will
see you again, soon, at our company. Thanks Patrick Huang |
I am currently
taking the Kung-Fu class with Sifu Richard Mieir-King. I really enjoy
the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Sifu Richard knows every student’s
weaknesses and strengths. He knows how each student ticks and knows
when to push them to their limits or when he should hold back.
My cardio has improved greatly since taking this class. I can really tell the difference from when I first began. I have much more stamina now. I definitely am more flexible and feel healthy. I am learning a great deal about the human body. Sifu Richard really knows a great deal about human physiology and anatomy. I would definitely recommend this class. This class is extremely fun and challenging. It gives you the confidence to succeed in life. Sifu Richard is not only a great teacher of Kung-Fu but life in general. Name: DH |
Thanks for your
Tai-Chi teaching in the past. It's really great & nice that I learned it for both better health & self defense. After learning & practice Tai-Chi in your class, my blood pressure & LDL (bad cholesterol) was under control near normal condition. Tai-Chi also reduced office stress during lunch break, learning and practicing in my employer's facility. Studies also shown: "Tai-Chi can reduce/control "blood sugar" for diabetics illness. So, your Tai-Chi classes are "inexpensive, affordable, low cost" learnings which have helped us for "better health condition" to reduce medical bills. Again, thank you for your teaching/coaching in the past. I loved & enjoyed it. R. Lee |
I like the
versatility of each
class session introducing new aspects of Martial Arts. From stretching,
health forms, chi na/joint locking, acupressure points, weapons, focus
mitts, and learning how to strengthen and protect your body. I benefit in Kung Fu class by listening and applying the techniques that were described in each class session. By learning a form, it helped me work on my mind, trying to remember many moves in a form that has over seventy moves. The butterfly form is foundation form, but has many application using open and close hands, with elbows, leg-sweeps, and kicks, etc. I also learned new applications in joint locks, how to lock out a neck, how to get out of various locks and holds. I would recommend King's Kung Fu to anyone who might be interested in taking up Martial Arts or just interested in taking up classes to improve their health. Instructors Richard Mieir-King and Jean have contributed many years of services to the City of Lakewood community and have dedicated themselves to various aspects of Martial Arts. They are very qualified instructors in the field of Martial Arts. Richard King has a great memory of animal forms and the teaching of many Chinese martial arts weapons. I have been a student with Richard for over five years, and have studied many different styles, and I think Sifu Richard Mieir-King teaches a good array of information in the study of Kung Fu and Martial Arts. He works one on one with students teaching new forms. He makes the lessons more personal. I would like to personally thank Richard King, for teaching me many lessons in Marital Arts and many lessons about life. Ray Mortaloni |
Thank you again for
everything that you did for our school. I have
received only positive feedback regarding your demonstration.
I want
to sign my family up for Tai Chi. We will definitely have you
back for
next year. L.B. |
I leaned Tai-Chi for a few years. First I joined Oak Park Tai-Chi Group. Richard taught Tai-Chi class I jointed the class. I learned a lot more because he explained every details of each movement and how you applied them to defensive and offensive moods. He is one of the best teachers i have ever encountered. I have summed up the reasons for why I like him most. 1. He started out with the breathing technique from the human nature wellness perspective. he explained we need to practice to breath thru your abdomen so your oxygen can circulate throughout your body. He observed how the baby breath and how the old people breathe. The old people breath are in the matter of short breath. I used to have that problem after I practiced Tai-chi I feel so good. so everyday I walked after dinner I practiced his breathing technique. This way enhance my breathing. 2. Also I used to have a belly. and look so ugly and not healthy at all. Richard corrected me the posture how we shall stand and walk. We must stand still and feel your body was hanging by a string . This technique solve the spine problems. 3.peaceful mind exercises. When you practiced each movement you synchronize with your breathing technique. This is also called dynamic meditation. After practice long you will not have undesired mind/thoughts. Your mind and body are in well balance. I do not know how to describe it due to my English proficiency. 4. Tai-chi can help you to heal your joint injuries. One time I was injured due to the fall. I contribute a lot of my body flexibility so I did not get hurt that much and also recovered faster than the normal people. Richard please correct my English grammar. I still some more to write but I stop here. This may be good enough for the time being. I appreciate your teaching and inspired me. Now I still practice twice a week and breathing almost everyday. If there is anything I can help, please let me know. P.H. |
I find
Tai Chi to be
enjoyable and invigorating. It has increased my balance and
mobility tremendously. I recommend Tai Chi to everyone who
asks
me about my activities. Shari |
We appreciate your
teachings. I
have never met any teacher who explained in so detail for each movement
as you. I/we hope we will see you soon at our company. Thanks Patrick Huang |
I've been taking
the
Chinese exercise class for a couple of months. I love
it! I
feel like I get a very good workout and my balance and stamina have
inproved greatly. I would recommend this class for anybody. M. Shields |
Sifu Richard Mieir-King is a remarkable person both as
and
instructor and an individual. He demonstrates this in teaching his Kung
Fu classes. I have never been instructed by an individual that is so
smooth and gentle, but also demands the correct forms and moves of Kung
Fu to be executed correctly. I would recommend his class to anyone that
is interested in joining a group of people that not only are being
taught Kung Fu, but also are have a great time learning. Sifu Richard
Mieir-King is so smooth and relaxed in his teaching that it inspires
you to want to come back as soon as you can to get another lesson.

When I started Kung-Fu, I was intimidated by the guys
in the
class. I was not only one of the few females in class, but also the
smallest one too. The main reason I continued the class was because of
the warmth and safe environment provided by Sifu Mieir-King. The class
is not run like a military training. Sifu always makes certain that
everyone is comfortable by allowing the students to work at their own
levels. Students work on the same drills and exercises, but at their
own pace. He also never forces you to work on thing that you’re not
ready for. With this great respect and understanding of Sifu
Mieir-King, it enhances my ability and courage to continue in Martial
Arts. My goal and mission for Kung-Fu was self-defense. But as the year goes by, I discovered that there are other great aspects to Martial Arts than self-defense. From Martial Arts, I’ve learned to be patient and to be a risk-taker. It has increased my self-esteem. I now have high expectations for myself by having courage to perform in front of a live audience. I would recommend this class to anyone who likes to learn self-defense in a fun atmosphere. Everyone in King’s Kung-Fu class is kind and friendly including Sifu. New-comers at all levels are welcome with great hospitality. Remember, Martial Arts are not designed for mortal combat, but also for good health, self-discipline and relieving stress. Kathy Taing |
It has been a privilege to train under the watchful eye
of
Sifu Richard Meir-King. At every class he is there leading, teaching
and participating at every level with his students. There is always
something new and exciting to learn as well as things that are familiar
and practiced regularly. He has structured all of his classes, around
the individual student in that he allows advancement at an individual
pace. He demands no less than proficiency in all techniques and forms
but yet understands different student's capabilities and limitations;
however, there is no fear of pushing those limitations so that each
student gains new insight into themselves. He does not put emphasis on
belt, rank or any superficial quality of a martial artist but rather
focuses on that special thing that is particular to the individual. My
experience under Sifu has been a positive one. I personally have had an
extensive background in Martial Art training, and what I have found
with Sifu is structure, and a new perspective of an ancient art. He has
given me incentive to achieve by being 100% non secretive about what
requirements are necessary of me in order to obtain the next level
excellence. I would encourage anyone, regardless of background, to
become involved with our school. The total benefits of increased
health, personal awareness, and increased self confidence highly
outweigh the cost of dedication, and personal dedication and commitment
will definitely by asked of you.

If you want learn Kung Fu, then Sifu King is the perfect teacher for
you. You will receive a well balanced martial arts experience of learning
both practical fighting skills as well as philosophy in his class. One example
of this are the drills that we practice in every class; Sifu explains both
the importance of the drills as well as the ideology and philosophy of why
such drills were/are practiced. Another example is the learning of forms:
movement, technique, approach and application are all taught with equal
importance. There is no one part of Kung Fu that is more important than the
others. And in most cases, the philosophy taught in class is applicable to
life in general.
Sifu's focus on the practical is only one of the characteristics that makes
his class so beneficial to the serious student. Students looking to have
discussions on lineage, hypothetical situations or comparisons will find
themselves out of place in this class. If--as a student--your biggest concern
is being able to tell people that your instructor learned from so and so
or that your fighting style is "the best", then perhaps another school is
what you're looking for. However, if you are looking for a well rounded martial
arts understanding, I cannot recommend Sifu King's class enough.
Ed Idian |
I had been looking for a Tai Chi class that was
geographically desirable for about six years. I finally came across one
in the Lakewood recreational catalog. After attending one class I knew
it was everything I had hoped it would be. Tai chi brings together the
mind and body, toning you from the inside out. I was able to learn the
Yang short form in about nine months going to class once a week. I
attribute this largely to the instruction that I receive from Sifu
Richard Mieir-King and his assistant instructors Jean West and John
Moore. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wishes to
improve their physical health and well-being.
Greg Wells |
I like it because it's good exercise, fun and I get to
learn
how to defend myself, if I needed to. It also helps to relax and
relieve the stress from the day or week. I am able to run and take the
stairs without gasping or panting every three steps, and when I get to
the third floor after taking the stairs it doesn't take five to ten
minutes to catch my breath or wait for my heart-rate to slow to normal.
Tai Chi and Kung Fu combined with a regular diet has also helped me to
lose weight consistently and steadily, rather than dieting alone. I
have recommended both Tai Chi and Kung Fu to people that I thought
would be interested given that they had tried other types of martial
arts. Most of all, I have fun and a great time in both Tai
Chi
and Kung Fu classes.

I
do see more depth and I do understand more everytime I do a form from
Tai Chi or Kung Fu. I learn and see more from part(s) of a move that I
hadn't noticed the first couple of times. That does include viewing a
form from a different angle or perspective. I've taken a self-defense class at a local community college. At that school (or class) they (the instructor) emphasized only three or four ways to get away from an attacker, but not what to do if they (the attacker) countered these pretty standard holds. Also, by the time the class term was over, I had just started to get an idea of what to do. This class had also made me more paranoid (and not in a good way) that I had been before taking the class. I feel that Sifu King's class is better and more preferable than the self-defense class. I believe that you can't learn how to defend yourself adequately with a 6-10 day course. Sure, its great for getting exercise, but not for something that you will have to rely on instinctively. There is so much more that is covered in these classes, than a self-defense course can't even come close to covering. I'm more aware of my surrounding now than I was before taking the Tai Chi and Kung Fu. [and not in a paranoid way!]. At the very least, I am more aware of what can realistically be done and not done. Before I started Tai Chi and then Kung Fu, I went to see a kickboxing class. I felt uncomfortable because the teacher, at least to me, seemed more interested in sparing than in teaching. It seems as if some people have a new bruise, pain, ache or injury as a result of their training. I have been taking classes with Sifu King for a little over 2 years; and the only time that I got hurt was, just recently, when I didn't block a strike the correct way. I was hurt ONE time in 2 years. I don't want or need to go to a class or instructor where I will come home with cuts, bruises and scraps. I've also noticed that very seldom does anyone get hurt in any of our classes. So, I know that what I'm getting here, I couldn't get from someone else. I've found that the quality and level of instruction to be very high, as well as the depth of the instruction. I feel that I learn more with the way that Sifu King teaches. He can show me the same thing numerous times and I learn something new every time. It also stays in my head longer than if he had just shown it to me once. I wish that I knew about these classes a lot earlier in my life. I feel at ease here. I don't feel like I am being pressured to learn forms at a speed that is not comfortable for me. I feel that there's no rush to more on to the next level of forms. I feel at ease with him because I feel that I can ask the same questions more than once and not be ridiculed or ignored because I didn't "get it" the first time. Karen Mueller |
Sifu's classroom atmosphere has made learning Kung Fu a
very
enjoyable experience; class is disciplined but is not militant.
Exercises, drills and philosophical lessons allows all students to
participate together while individual acting allows students learn at
their own pace. My stamina and over all physical conditioning has improved over the past two years. Lessons on fighting strategy have fostered new insights to other parts of my life from simple things like how I relax or breathe to the more dynamic like interaction with other people or understanding how nature affects all things. Class has given me a well rounded improvement both physically and mentally. I would recommend class for anyone who is interested in learning how to make their actions a reflection of their thoughts. Kung Fu will sharpen the mind while improving coordination resulting in a better understanding of one's own mind and body. EI |
One of the best reasons for studying Kung-Fu is
learning a
variety of things about the body. You might call it body
maintenance. You not only learn ways to defend yourself but a lot about
body mechanics. You get knowledge of how to keep others from
hurting you as you receive education on strengthening your body and
mind, and preventing injury. The class is also good for
mental
focus, which helps reduce stress levels. In today's world
that is
a must. There are few people who understand the art and
health
benefits, both mental and physical, which Kung-Fu can provide them.
We recommend this class.
Grant and Mary Workman |
My main reason for studying Kung Fu is I wanted to
protect
myself from weaponless attacks by aggressors. I also thought this would
be a good way to enjoy exercise, and improve my balance and
coordination. I enjoy contact type sports and martial arts allowed me
this opportunity. I have been able to gain confidence in myself when
dealing with various events through out my life. You are probably
wondering how this could be. In martial arts, new techniques are taught
a few moves at a time. Each series of moves builds upon what you have
previously learned. This procedure is repeated until the whole
technique is learned. I have applied this to difficult situations I
have encountered, whether a major project at work or school, or a
family situation. My training has taught me how to break things down
into workable parts. Soon I am able to master these parts and finalize
my situation with out undue stress. If you apply what you learn in
martial arts class to every day life experiences, and not just
self-defense, you will gain more from your training. I would recommend King's Kung-Fu training to every one because of what I have gained from my training. It is a good way to broaden your mental as well as physical being. There are so many side benefits in martial arts besides self-defense. Tony DiAngelo, Laguna Nigel, CA |
When I joined the class I was pretty out of shape. I am
so
happy that the instruction is geared to let me perform at my level but
not push so hard that I don't want to come back. The discipline I've
developed is very useful in other life endeavors.
Dave Cook, Hawthorne, CA |
I am a high school teacher by trade and have been into
the
martial arts since about 1975. I have studied under several masters,
teachers, sifus, and senseis. I have done judo (was on judo team in
college), northern style kung fu (earned a black belt), some aikido,
some hapkido, and some karate. I initially chose Sifu King because of
his credentials. I followed that up with personal meetings and several
written communications. I believe I have found a knowledgeable sifu who
can communicate and demonstrate the many skills needed for kung fu. He
earns the respect of his students in action and deed. He shows personal
interest in us as students and as persons. I have learned more from
Sifu King than I have under the several other teachers, senseis,
masters, and sifus I have had. His depth of knowledge never ceases to
amaze me. I could go on about some the things I have seen in other
schools that were not good or right, but that isn't the point. The
point is I don't see those things with Sifu King. I am very proud to be
one of his students.
Robert Rockwell |
I am very honored and fortunate to call you my sifu, as
well
as my friend. you have really helped me in the path of chi development
and focus, and i will always be open to your instruction. The late yip
man once said that a good teacher does not just drill a student in one
linear path, but teaches the student in a way that makes it best for
him to learn. I believe Sifu King does this. He always seem to teach by
example. this is great, for if he only said to do this or that because
it was handed down that way, and never tell why or how the movements
work, then there would be some who learned from him and some who could
not because they could not understand. as it is, Sifu King provides a
map for each of us. while the directions may not always be the same
path for each person, the end result is still the same destination.
becoming a better martial warrior and person. I have learned to trust
him and depend on his wisdom. as a teacher. Leaning is not just on the
teachers part. the student must want to seek the answers and find the
truth. you can point one in that direction as a sifu, but if a student
does not try truly to grasp your knowledge then he/she is to blame.
learning from you is always fun and rewarding. my power has doubled
since i found Sifu King. and i intend to keep going as long as you will
teach. i know him to be honorable and a true master of your art. stay
the course. respectfully,
Peter Stickler, extension Student in Colorado |
It is good to learn
self defense and discipline and it is a very relaxing environment, no
pressure, you go at your own pace. Rose Liwag |
The class builds
confidence,
self esteem, defense. I get good exercise, relaxation and
defense
techniques. I would recommend it for woman - for self defense
in
these crazy times. Laura Tamura |
I
decided to take Tai Chi for the "anti" stress benefits it possesses.
Upon starting training with Sifu Richard, I instantly became driven to
learn more & evolve into a more relaxed/devoted student of the
Art. I have gained more confidence & agility through the techniques I have acquired in class & find myself subconsciously using them in every day life. I feel there is a high level of professional, personal & friendly interaction in class & carry the utmost respect for Sifu Richard. He always takes the time to explain & make me understand the mechanics of all movements. I always look forward to class & highly enjoy all I learn. I would recommend and refer anybody who is interested in the Art to Sifu Richard! Thank you for showing me the way to a better quality of life! Sincerely, Stacey Kramer |
I greatly value the days that I have Tai Chi with both
Sifu
Richard and Jean. I look forward to Thursdays just for Tai Chi class.
Even if it's the longest of my work & school days I muster
through
them because I know that in the evening I have class with our teacher,
Richard Mieir-King. I always find the motivation to go to his class
because it's such a constructive and positive environment to learn in.
I feel if our teachers will be there and meet me half way to improving
my skills, I have no excuse not to go to class with an open mind, or
putting forth the effort. Sifu Richard and Sifu Jean are my
first
instructors in my martial arts training but I do take many classes
academic and extracurricular so I do know that they have the qualities
of gifted teachers. The two things that I value the most in teachers
that they both have is patience, and the ability to give constructive
& positive feedback to the students. The training that I
receive
and find of benefit to me is that this class is self-paced, if I'm
frustrated or confused with a part or a movement I can take my time
learning it and I never feel rushed or reluctant about asking questions
and Sifu Richard always asks me if I need to review something or if he
can clarify something with me. Best of all is the atmosphere that our
class has; it is both serene and non-competitive. I
thoroughly
enjoy the company and camaraderie of all my fellow classmates and
teachers.
